Gold Gains as Treasury Yields Retreat Ahead of Fed Minutes Release

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – Gold saw a slight increase during Asian trading on Wednesday as U.S. Treasury yields declined from recent peaks. Spot gold climbed 0.2% to $4,342.33 an ounce at 0030 GMT after nearly a 2% drop on Tuesday. December U.S. gold futures decreased 0.6% to $4,396.30 an ounce. This rebound kept market focus on interest-rate expectations in bullion trading. The Federal Reserve has scheduled the release of minutes from its July policy meeting for 1800 GMT Wednesday.

Gold rises as Treasury yields ease before Fed minutes
Gold markets track Treasury yields and Federal Reserve rate expectations.

Gold had declined on Tuesday following two days of gains. Spot bullion fell 1.1% to $4,364.90 an ounce by 1733 GMT. December futures settled 1.2% lower at $4,420.60. A global bond selloff drove long-term borrowing costs in several major economies to levels not seen in decades. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3371% on Tuesday, its highest point in nearly 20 years, before easing to about 5.28% during Asian trading Wednesday.

Markets for interest rates continued to show a diminished expectation for a rate hike in September. According to CME FedWatch data, there is a 65% chance that policymakers will hold rates steady next month. Traders see a 35% probability of a quarter-point increase. Lower rate expectations generally support gold since bullion does not generate interest. Recent U.S. economic data revealed unexpected employment declines, subdued inflation, and weaker retail spending in July, which reduced market bets for an immediate rate hike.

    Fed minutes spotlight policy disagreements

On July 29, the Federal Reserve maintained its federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%. The Federal Open Market Committee approved this decision with a 9-3 vote. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan favored a quarter-point hike. The committee stated that economic activity continued to expand at a solid pace despite high uncertainty. Inflation remained above its 2% target, partly due to supply shocks that pushed prices up in sectors including energy. Employment growth kept pace with the workforce, and unemployment remained relatively stable.

These divisions drew more attention to the detailed record of the July meeting. Chairman Kevin Warsh presided over his second policy gathering as Fed chair. The July statement indicated that the central bank would keep ample reserves in the banking system. The upcoming policy meeting is scheduled from Sept. 15 to Sept. 16, when officials will again set the target range after reviewing economic and financial conditions within the framework of the central bank’s monetary policy.

Bond yields continue to influence gold trading dynamics

Treasury yields remained a key factor affecting precious metals following Tuesday’s sharp movement. Rising yields increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not pay interest. Oil prices stayed elevated, adding another inflation-sensitive element to markets. Early Wednesday saw mixed trading among other precious metals, with spot silver dropping 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, platinum rising 0.3% to $1,717.03, and palladium falling 0.3% to $1,286.73, reflecting the uneven performance across the sector.

Gold started Wednesday after a volatile August that followed a relatively steady July. According to the World Gold Council, global gold exchange-traded funds experienced $3 billion in net inflows during July. Total holdings rose by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons, and assets under management increased 1% to $530 billion. The early rebound on Wednesday only partly recovered Tuesday’s decline. Expectations around interest rates, Treasury yields, and U.S. monetary policy continued to dominate the gold market’s key indicators.
